Home Access Update

On Monday the 11th of January, Gordon Brown announced that free laptops with broadband internet are to be provided to more than a quarter of a million low-income households across the UK in a bid to boost exam results and job chances.

The Prime Minister launched the national rollout 'Home Access' a £300 million government programme managed by Becta, the UK government's agency responsible for driving the effective use of technology in education. He stated: "We want every family to become a broadband family, and we want every home linked to a school. For those finding it difficult to afford this, today I can announce the nationwide rollout of our home access programme to get laptops and broadband at home for 270,000 families." . . .

Next Generation Learning Training 2010

In the context of transforming teaching and learning through the effective use of new technologies, LGfL has recognised that the influence of school leaders is so prevailing within school, that unless leaders are engaged and informed, then all external effort and support (including all LGfL services and support) are at risk of being marginalised – the domain only of the enthusiast, the exceptional teacher.

Consequently LGfL has prioritised the development of a new 2 day support programme for school leaders, informed by some of the best practitioners in the region, coordinated by Stewart Smith of Brent LA.

The Next Generation Learning programme is aimed at head teachers and members of the senior leadership team and is available to all schools. It will provide an opportunity to work together to further the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to continue developing Digital Technology and Institutional Change.

The programme supports the development of school-wide ICT activities as a means to further raising standards in teaching and learning. This programme is about ICT strategy and managing change, not about ICT skills. It is therefore, where at all possible, best attended by more than one member of the leadership team so as to maximize the opportunity for thinking and planning. ICT subject leaders are welcome but really should be accompanied by the head teacher or another member of the senior leadership team.

Evaluations from attendees clearly show that this is where schools gain the maximum benefit from the programme.
